Henderson students receive awards for positive behavior

Henderson Elementary School has received Gold Level Recognition through the Missouri Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (MO SW-PBS). This ‘Award of Excellence’ recognizes Henderson’s implementation of the multi-tiered system of support model, which creates “safe and orderly learning environments in schools, while improving the social-emotional outcomes for students.”

SW-PBS has been an initiative at Henderson for over ten years, and staff and students have worked together towards full implementation of the different tiers. Through these efforts, Henderson has set behavior expectations for students and provided support for those who need a little more help in meeting expectations. The implementation has also created consistent language building-wide, so students understand that expectations are always the same at Henderson.

Megan Abramczyk, the Administrative Intern at Henderson, has worked on the program for the last two years and is overwhelmed by the achievement. “Our staff has worked really hard over the years to make sure they are following the parts of the program in their classroom and in our building,” said Abramczyk. “To finally be recognized for full implementation is a huge celebration.”

One important component that Henderson has focused on is community building. Each morning, students participate in community meetings, which help to build strong relationships with each other and teachers in the building. These relationships help students feel safe and comfortable at school and give them the confidence to have conversations with teachers when they need help or support.

In addition to community building, Henderson has found ways to recognize their students and staff. Students can receive positive office referrals and Soaring Eagle awards for positive behavior. Abramczyk has seen a significant decrease in office referrals for misconduct and an increase in safety and routine in the building. After years of hard work, the Henderson community is seeing their efforts come to fruition and are celebrating the great achievement!
